Better Streets for Birmingham

We want a Birmingham where walking, cycling, wheeling and public transport are the first choices for getting around.

Many people in Birmingham want to walk, wheel, cycle and take public transport for more of their journeys. And a third of households don’t own a car.

Our pavements are cluttered with cars, many streets are serious and fatal crash hotspots, and buses are unreliable because they are stuck in congestion. This leads to more people driving short trips and makes the problems worse.

We want to enable more people to leave their car at home by:

Building protected lanes for people to wheel and cycle in

Changing our streets to be slower, simpler, greener and healthier

Prioritising buses and trams

As proven by cities across the world, this will lead to fewer, less severe crashes and healthier residents with more money in their pockets. For people who still need to drive, their journeys will become quicker, easier and safer.
